Show in Piacenza from 13th May to 1st June 2017...     I am back in the Apennines, preparing for my forthcoming exhibition at Rosso Tiziano art gallery in Piacenza – www.rossotiziano.com – from 13th May until 1st June. The show is called Divagation–Divagazione, thus denoting a change of direction.   Previous shows have often had ironic medical themed titles viz. ‘It Was Healing Nicely’, ‘Voluntary Discharge’ and my last one-person show in Milan, ‘Vital Signs’. Six months after this last show, I was diagnosed with a serious heart condition requiring a triple-bypass which was duly completed in May. Although I have recovered well, I think I shall park the ironic medical titles for a while. In Piacenza, I am showing a figurative triptych based on a well-known story; all will be revealed on the 13th! If you are unable to come to the exhibition, images of the new work will appear on this...

VITAL SIGNS – Margherita Zanoletti...       VITAL SIGNS Charlie Johnson Gli Eroici Furori Milano 15 al 20 settembre 2015   Some people take photos when they travel, I take a sketch book. The act of recording on paper is my preferred way of responding to a particular scene or place. Italy acted as a stimulus, providing relief from an overcrowded London art scene (“In viaggio alcuni scattano fotografie, io mi porto un album da disegno. L’atto di registrare su carta è il mio modo preferito di reagire a una scena o un luogo particolare. L’Italia ha fornito stimoli e sollievo da una scena artistica londinese soffocante”) La nuova mostra di Charlie Johnson (dal 2000 vive e lavora tra Londra e l’Italia) presenta per la prima volta a Milano una selezione di opere prodotte negli scorsi dodici anni, raccogliendo i frutti dei viaggi mentali e materici compiuti dall’artista...

Vital Signs in Milan...       I had a show in Milan called ‘VITAL SIGNS’ in September 2015 at Gli Eroici Furori gallery. You can see a video of the show at: https://youtu.be/hJ8LE9TkdYY ‘VITAL SIGNS’ is named because I have had a number of solo and small group shows to which I have given quasi-medical titles, ‘It Was Healing Nicely’, ‘Voluntary Discharge’ etc. The Italian exhibitions have had perhaps more pretentious titles, such as ‘Colour Codes’ and my most political show, ‘Codex Australis’ which had the sub-title ‘South Polemic’. I also had in mind the 17th century Dutch painter, Meindert Hobbema, who lived in Amsterdam, was taught by Jacob van Ruisdael and probably knew Rembrandt. His long painting career encompassed fifty or so years, but whose most notable paintings, perhaps 10-15 in all, including his most famous ‘The Avenue at Middelharnis’ , were all produced in a...

Blog November 2014 I suppose the function of a blog other than the obvious vanity project, is to supply some personal details to put alongside largely anonymous images. These at best may serve as a rough commentary or back story to the work. I am in the process of collecting more images of my work, which I have neglected to do in the past. Whenever someone buys a piece of work, I am usually so pleased that the need to record it gets overlooked. There is a whole series of pieces that I made in the eighties and nineties which I have virtually no record of. However that failure and its consequence is, to me, far outweighed by the joy I feel when I visit someone’s house and there is a painting of mine on the wall. The most recent work now on the site is the...
